Drug developer Novartis spent just over $1.6 million in the second quarter lobbying the U.S. government on prescription drug issues and other legislation, according to a recent disclosure form.

The spending marks an 11 percent reduction from just over $1.8 million spent in the year-ago period, and is down from the $2 million spent in the 2010 first quarter.

Novartis makes flu vaccines and a range of pharmaceuticals. The Swiss company lobbied on bills focusing on health reform issues, market access issues and drug importation. The company also lobbied on global trade issues, pandemic flu treatment funding, patent issues, and Medicare coverage issues, according to the filing with the House clerk’s office on July 20.

Aside from Congress, the company also lobbied the Departments of Commerce, Defense, and Health and Human Services during the April to June period.
