Some Tips for Peak Concentration on the Golf Course

Posted on Friday, 1st April 2011 in Golf Tips

As you may already know, concentration is pivotal in all sport performance, not just in golf.  It is so much more than the ability of not being distracted or even visualizing the shot.

Granted, hardly any of the authors of ANY golf training book have comprehensive training in golf psychology, so let me give you some tips for peak concentration on the golf course. I’m not talking about “grinding” out on the course…this will burn you out early in the round and mentally deplete you.

First off, dance with which you brought to the course…in other words, don’t try to fix your swing out on the course. There is plenty of time to fix your swing on the range after the round. Your job on the course is to play golf, not play swing…you need to score!

Your thoughts need to be focused on getting the ball into the cup in the least amount of strokes possible…the object of the game! (How soon we forget this fact) The only things you should be thinking about while you plan your shot is the target, distance, direction, wind speed, your lie…and any other factor that comes into play.

Forget about your last shot and what score you might shoot…

Concentrate on the shot at hand…

You need to discipline yourself to stay in the moment…this takes time to master…if you want to become an accomplished golfer you MUST master this skill.

Once upon a time your ability to concentrate was incredible. Before you could think or understand what words are. This was when you were a baby. Your brain was a sponge. As a baby you could hold your attention on anything in your field of vision without any distracting thoughts.

As you got older and learned how to talk and to think you soon became aware of that little voice inside your head that seems to be with you during every waking moment.

It is that little voice that you can’t quiet no matter how hard you try. It is always telling you that the golf shot is too hard, or the other guy is better than you.

Zen master Dogen-Zenji teaches not to stop negative thoughts in your mind…let them stop by themselves. If some negative thought comes into your mind, let it come in, let it go out. It will not stay long if you are not attached to the thought. When you TRY to stop your thinking of a negative thought, it means you are bothered by it. Do not be bothered by anything.

It may appear as if negative thoughts come from outside your mind, but actually they are only waves of your mind, and if you are not bothered by the waves, gradually they will become calmer and calmer. In five or ten minutes your mind will be completely serene and calm. At this time your breathing will become quite slow.

Now that your breathing is slow and your mind is calm, you can nourish your mind with positive thoughts. Your mind follows your breathing, if you are breathing slowly; your mind is ready to focus on only the thoughts that will allow you to play the shot at hand.

If your ego gets in the way and you are thinking of how to impress someone, this thought will get in the way of your objective to play the shot at hand. Let the thought come and let it pass…do not try to get rid of it, let it pass on its own, like a wave on the ocean!

5 Essential Golf Fitness Exercises

5 Essential Golf Fitness Exercises

Golf fitness is a must if you really want to play your best and prevent injuries.  It’s all over the internet, TV and radio and becoming the sole ambition of  amateur golfers so as to realize their full true potential.  Many golfers have accepted there is a fitness component to golf, and are actively training to get fit for golf.

It may sound like an contradiction,  but tell me if you’ve ever hurt yourself playing golf.  How about a strained lower back?  Or, a sore shoulder after playing?  The list of injuries from swinging a golf club is a mile long.
This would defend the point that getting fit for golf is NOT  a contradiction,  but is actually a necessity, if you want to end the frustration, and play like you know you are can.

Golf is a ‘physical’ game that puts a tremendous amount of stress on the body.  Muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints pay the price if your golf muscles are not strong enough to withstand the forces from a golf swing at a speed up to and exceeding 100 mph.

Think about that!
You swing a 3 foot implement at up to 100 mph, while maintaining a very dynamic body position.  That’s physically impossible unless you’ve got the muscular strength and flexibility to achieve these swing mechanics.

Look at putting!  How often have you practiced for only 5-10 minutes and your lower back was killing you?  You know what the culprit was?  Tight hamstrings and a weak lower back.  Golfers who are fit for golf don’t experience this.  They can practice putting for an hour and not feel it.

Wouldn’t that be nice?

How about hitting out of deep rough?  How many times did you leave the ball right where it was when you started?  Or if you did advance it, your wrist was killing you after it?

This would not happen if your were fit for golf!

You’ve got to take a look at the facts!  Golf like all sport is ‘physical’.  Golf takes a tremendous amount of strength and flexibility.  Golf causes injuries to body’s that are out of shape.  Golf is frustrating when you are the shortest hitter in your foursome.  Golf can make you crazy!
Stop the insanity…and Get Fit For Golf!

P.S. Don’t forget to warm up first!

This is Death to Your Golf Swing!

Posted on Saturday, 26th March 2011 in Golf Swing

San Diego Chiropractor and Golf Fitness Doctor, Peter MacKay, DC, has designed the golf swing exercises to improve your swing and drive distance and reduce golf related injury.

Dr. MacKays golf exercises will reduce your risk for golf injury and golf related pain and will improve your golf performance. Stretching properly before the game will improve your swing and entire game. Pre game golf warm up will reduce golf related injury. (contact details below)

Fitness for golf is prevalent at every level. You hear about it all the time on the television and even teaching pros are talking more about the importance of fitness for golf.

The reason being is the belief that your ‘physical limitations’ are keeping you from optimal swing mechanics, power, distance and accuracy.

For the aging golfer this is most prevalent.

Without a golf-specific exercise program, it is virtually impossible to maintain and/or improve swing mechanics. The human body declines rapidly without stress being put on it.

What I mean…is muscles and bones need stress and pressure on them to remain strong, stable and injury-free. Without this stress…the body weakens and breaks down quickly…resulting in a rapid decline in strength and flexibility.

This is death to your golf swing!

The old adage – “use it or lose it” is very true. Haven’t you experienced a time when you were too busy with family obligations, work commitments and other stress-related issues and you felt you didn’t have the time to devote to your health and fitness?

What happened shortly after that?

Did you energy level go down? Did you start getting aches and pains and even newfound stiffnesses? How about your golf game? Did you feel like you didn’t have the same amount of umph on the ball?

This is that declining strength and flexibility I’m talking about. And the ONLY way to stop this from happening is maintaining some sort for fitness for golf program if it pertains to your golf game.

There are also two forms of fitness. “General fitness” and “sport-specific” or fitness for golf in regards to you as a golfer.

There is a major difference between these two forms of fitness.

One that is very common is going into a gym, plopping down on the machines and isolating one muscle group at a time in a controlled environment. Picture for instance an abdominal machine. You lie down in it, grap fixed handles that guide you through a set range of motion.

That would be considered “general fitness”.

On the other hand, picture standing (just like you do in golf) holding a single hand weight (dumbbell) straight out in front of you, and rotating (turning) back and through just like your golf swing. That is an exercise that would be consider fitness for golf. It directly benefits your rotational strength AND flexibility…enabling you to make a bigger turn with more power.

This area rapidly declines with the older golfer. Abdominal strength and flexibility if not tested often, will decrease, and the ability to make a full backswing with stored energy will be less and less…resulting in a massive reduction in power output, therefore distance.

So the next time you’re on the course and you get frustrated about you lack of distance off the tee…ask yourself “what was the last time you worked on your BODY?” Your answer will dictate your performance on a daily basis.

I have just barely scratched the surface of the importance of fitness for golf…but I hope I’ve got you thinking about how important Fitness for golf is if you want to play your best golf.
